We will get things wrong. What matters is what happens next.
How we handle an error
When we publish something inaccurate, we correct it in public. The correction appears at the top of the affected article, states what was wrong and what is right, and carries the date it was made. The original error is not silently deleted.
We distinguish between three things:
- Corrections — a factual error that changed the meaning of the article.
- Clarifications — the facts were right but the wording could reasonably mislead.
- Updates — the story moved on. These are logged with a timestamp and are not errors.
Reporting an error
Write to us with the article URL, the specific claim you believe is wrong, and any source that supports your version. We respond to every correction request, including the ones where we conclude the article was right.
You do not need to be the subject of the story to raise a correction.
Our timeline
We aim to acknowledge a correction request within two working days and to resolve it within five. Where a claim is serious and we cannot resolve it quickly, we will say so rather than let it sit unanswered.
Right of reply
If you are named in an article and believe it is unfair or incomplete, tell us. Where the point is substantive, we will add your response to the article itself.
