Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) urged the Tamil Nadu government to conduct a comprehensive audit of the condition of school buildings across the State and ensure that the amount allocated for their construction is spent properly on using quality raw materials.

Citing a roof collapse incident at the Panchayat Union Middle School in Koogalur near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district on July 20, Mr. Vasan, in a statement, said fortunately, no one was injured as the incident occurred on a holiday. He said the school building was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in July 2024 and within a year of its opening, the roof collapsed, exposing the poor quality of construction.

He said the materials used for constructing school buildings should be of top quality. However, a part of the total amount allocated for such buildings was allegedly misused, leading to poor-quality raw materials being used, he alleged. “This is the reality across Tamil Nadu. Funds allocated for any government scheme are rarely spent fully or effectively. As a result, people are not benefiting from the schemes they are rightfully entitled to,” he said.

The State government should give high priority to government schools and ensure that there is no compromise in transparency and accountability, he added.
