Unidentified persons hurl petrol bombs at vehicles of private school after student’s death in Tirunelveli

Unidentified persons, suspected to be relatives of a student at a private school who died by suicide on Thursday (July 17, 2025) night, hurled Molotov cocktails at the school’s buses and vans near Veeravanallur.

The police said the 15-year-old boy, a Class X student from Maanaabharananallur near Veeravanallur, was reportedly censured by his teachers for “behaving in an unruly manner” and “not studying well” on July 4. Upset over this, he attempted suicide on July 7 on the school premises. He was rushed to the Cheranmahadevi Government Hospital.

After being administered first aid, he was taken to a private hospital in Madurai, where he died on Thursday night while under treatment.

Demanding action against the teachers of the private school, the student’s relatives staged a road roko in front of the Veeravanallur police station late on Thursday night. After the police held talks with the protesters, they left the spot.

Against this backdrop, unidentified persons hurled Molotov cocktails at the school’s vehicles parked along Veeravanallur-Vellankuli Road after midnight, some of which suffered extensive damage.

Fire tenders from Cheranmahadevi and police personnel from the Veeravanallur station rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire.

During their investigation, the police found that some of the protesters, while returning home, had thrown petrol bombs at the buses and vans to express their anger.

Further investigation is under way.
