Mukul Dev’s death at the age of 54 left his family and fans in deep shock. His brother, actor Rahul Dev, recently opened up about dealing with the loss and revealed that Mukul had not been doing well for a while. According to him, Mukul was stricken by loneliness after the death of their parents. He also shared how Mukul’s divorce took a toll on him. He revealed that Mukul rejected acting projects and limit himself to writing.
‘Mukul stopped eating 4-5 days before death’
In a conversation with ETimes, Rahul revealed that Mukul had been admitted to the hospital for eight days before his death, largely due to poor eating habits. He said Mukul had completely stopped eating for four to five days before his demise. Rahul added, “He felt lonely, and he had lost interest in life. Usko zindagi jeene ka jazba nahi tha.” The actor even refused many work offers despite rahul encouraging him to return to acting.
‘Mukul shifted to Delhi to take care of ailing dad’
Rahul shared that Mukul had shifted to Delhi in 2019 to care for their ailing father. However, their father passed away the same year, and their mother died in 2023. He said Mukul never truly recovered from their father’s death. Since Mukul was divorced and his daughter didn’t live with him, her absence also had a significant impact on him, and he “grew reclusive.” Rahul explained, “He wasn’t looking after himself, and living alone didn’t help.”
‘People who commented on Mukul’s death were not in touch with him for years’
Rahul also called out people who labeled Mukul as depressed and unfit. He questioned why those same people didn’t keep in touch or visit him during his final days. “He felt isolated. Who really stayed in touch with him between 2019 and 2024? Did they visit him when he was in hospital or attend his prayer meet? He had two upcoming releases and had recently shot in England for Son of Sardaar. No one will cast you if you’re not fit.”
Rahul further admitted that whenever he scolded Mukul for neglecting his health, Mukul would start avoiding him. He reflected on their youth, saying that while Mukul was the heartthrob, he himself was more reserved. He added, “And the irony is, someone so naturally social ended up so alone. He never remarried or tried again.”
Rahul also revealed that he lost his wife, his father and now his brother in the month of May. He also reflected on how he has to now deal with grief when all the rituals are done. “He was not a bechara,” said Rahul, saying that he chooses to remember his brother for the vivacious and charming presence that he was.
