Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has said the steel bank initiative is a commendable step towards building a greener future.
He was speaking after participating in the ‘Steel Bank’ kits distribution programme held under the aegis of Ponnam Sathaiah Goud Memorial Trust and also the Indira Mahila Shakti celebrations in Koheda town of Siddipet district on Thursday.
The eco-friendly initiative has been launched by Minister for Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar in memory of his father to distribute steel banks to the members of all 276 women self-help groups (SHGs) in 164 villages of Husnabad Assembly constituency. The initiative is aimed at combating the menace of single-use plastic items and encouraging the use of steel utensils in community events such as weddings and social gatherings in a collaborative mode involving the women SHGs.
The Governor handed over the steel bank kits containing steel glasses, plates and other utensils to the members of around 38 Gramaikya Sanghams on the occasion. Mr Ponnam Prabhakar presided over the meeting.
Minister for Environment & Forests Konda Surekha and others were present.
The Governor hailed the ‘Bartan Bank” initiative saying it will pave the way for laying a strong foundation for a greener future.
It will have profound social impact more powerful than the automobile and IT revolution, he noted, terming the SHGs’ movement as a shining example of women’s empowerment movement.
