SFI protest turns violent at Kannur University

The Students Federation of India (SFI)’s protest march to the Kannur University headquarters on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) turned violent afternoon with clashes breaking out between student activists and the police.

The protest was part of a Statewide campaign against alleged saffronisation of universities in Kerala.

Tensions escalated around noon when the activists breached police barricade and stormed the university gate, damaging property in the process. Several students and police personnel sustained injures during the confrontation. Protesters smashed window panes of the administrative building and staged a demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, raising slogans.

The police used water cannons multiple times to disperse the crowd, but the activists regrouped and managed to breach the cordon. The situation spiralled when the students broke the gate to gain entry into the premises. The protest ended with police arresting and forcibly removing several agitators. Protesters also briefly blocked the police vehicle transporting the arrested students.

The march was inaugurated by SFI central committee member Bipin Raj Payam and chaired by State committee member Anjali Santhosh.
