The Supreme Court today asked the State of Tamil Nadu to explain its “prosecutorial plan” in the cash-for-jobs corruption cases involving former Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthilbalaji.
A Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi orally observed that the arraigning 2000-odd persons as accused in the case resembled a “rudderless ship”.
The court said the alleged bribe-givers in the case were actually victims. Turning them into accused would delay the trial.
On Tuesday, the apex court had questioned if Tamil Nadu was trying to delay the trial in the cash-for-jobs scam cases involving Mr. Senthilbalaji by incriminating over 2,000 people as accused.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Y. Balaji, challenging a Madras High Court order of March 28 dismissing pleas against the clubbing of multiple chargesheets in cases related to the alleged scam.
According to a report filed in the apex court by a trial judge in April, there are around 2,300 accused in cases involving the former Tamil Nadu minister in the cash-for-jobs “scam”.
The former Minister had resigned from the government in April after being pulled up by the court.
