Kerala has made remarkable progress in the solar energy sector, said Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty.
He was speaking at the inauguration function to declare Paralam grama panchayat as the State’s first fully street-lit panchayat on Saturday.
“Today, Paralam grama panchayat marks its place in history,” the Minister said, adding that ensuring lighting in every corner of the village is one of the core responsibilities of a local body. The panchayat has successfully achieved a lighting revolution, covering all Public Works department and panchayat roads in its jurisdiction.
The achievement is the result of a collective, imaginative, and non-partisan effort. Over the past four and a half years, the panchayat spent ₹62.69 lakh on the maintenance of street lights. For the current year, ₹6.51 lakh has been earmarked for the same purpose. In total, ₹89.20 lakh has been spent in over five years through the annual plans of the panchayat, making it the first to declare full street light coverage.
The declaration event was presided over by Paralam grama panchayat president Mini Vinayan.
