Paddy supply may be hit as lorry owners begin indefinite strike in Thanjavur district

Paddy movement from the direct purchase centres in Thanjavur district is likely to be hit as lorry owners began indefinite strike demanding an increase in the contract charges.

According to M. Sundaravel, president, lorry owners association, Thanjavur, successful bidders of the paddy transport tenders in the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, Thanjavur region, has engaged the services of owners of 1,200 lorries hailing from Pillaiyarpatti, Chennampatti, Nanjikottai, and Punalkulam, for the transportation of paddy from the DPCs to the godowns/goods sheds.

As per the tender, the successful bidders were to provide ₹598 per 7 km as transportation charges to lorry owners engaged by them. But they were releasing only ₹320 to lorry owners, Mr. Sundaravel said.

As repeated pleas for enhancement of the contract charges with the successful bidders failed, the lorry owners embarked on an indefinite strike from July 28, affecting the movement of paddy from the DPCs to the godowns and goods sheds.
