The State government has announced that there will be no fee hike for nursing courses this academic year.
Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharan Prakash Patil said this in a meeting with the Association of Nursing Colleges at Vikasa Soudha on Thursday.
Plea rejected
“The government will not allow any increase in the fees. Most nursing students come from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Imposing additional fees is unjust and unacceptable,” said Dr. Patil, rejecting the association’s plea to raise the fees.
He said that the existing fee structure, ₹10,000 under the government quota, ₹1 lakh under the management quota, and ₹1.4 lakh for the non-Karnataka students, will continue. “Any college charging more than the approved fee will face penalties and legal action. We will not hesitate to revoke their affiliation,” he said.
Currently, there are 611 nursing colleges in the State with around 35,000 seats. Of these, 80% are filled by the management, and 20% fall under the government quota.
The Minister also directed the Karnataka Examination Authority Executive Director H. Prasanna to ensure reimbursement of fees to nursing colleges within 30 days.
Engineering fee hike flayed
The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has condemned the State government’s decision to hike the fees for engineering and architecture courses. The fees for government seats in private unaided colleges have been increased by 7.5%, and fees in government colleges have been increased by 5%.
The AIDSO has sought a rollback of the hike.
