In an inspiring act of humanity amidst personal tragedy, a 56-year-old man from Vijayawada has given a new lease of life to seven others after being declared brain dead following a road accident.
The 56-year-old donor, a resident of Vijayawada, met with an accident on July 7 near the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in the city, where he was struck by an unidentified individual riding a scooter with triple riders.
He was immediately shifted to Aster Ramesh Hospitals, Vijayawada, and later moved to their Guntur unit for advanced neuro care. A CT scan revealed a critical head injury and intracranial bleeding. Despite all medical efforts, he was declared brain dead after a thorough assessment.
Following established protocols, the hospital notified Jeevandan, the government organ donation initiative, whose representatives counselled the grieving family about the life-saving potential of organ donation.
Moved by the possibility of saving lives even in loss, the family gave their consent for organ donation on Thursday, that led to seven recipients being matched across hospitals: one kidney was retained and transplanted at Aster Ramesh Hospitals, Guntur. The heart was transported to Sri Padmavathi Children’s Heart Centre in Tirupati. Both lungs were sent to KIMS Hospitals in Telangana. The liver was taken to Manipal Hospital in Guntur. The second kidney was given to Capital Hospital. The eyes were donated to the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, explained Pothineni Ramesh Babu, managing director of Aster Ramesh Hospitals.
Dr. Ramesh Babu hailed the act as a remarkable gift of life and expressed deep appreciation for the donor family’s courageous and compassionate decision.
