The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday questioned Varun Purushotham, an accused in the multi-crore liquor scam case in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Varun, named Accused No. 40 in the case, had been on the run, and the police took him into custody at the Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad soon after his arrival from Dubai. He was later shifted to the SIT office in Vijayawada. Earlier, the ACB Special Court had issued a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) against him in the case.

The investigating officers were inquiring into why Mr. Varun went to Dubai, were there any other accused behind his foreign trip, where did he stay in Dubai, and whether he had any information on cash dumps. More arrests were likely in the case, the investigation officers said.

“We are probing deep into the liquor scam in which about ₹3,500 crore has been swindled, causing huge loss to the government. The SIT teams, which have conducted raids on the properties of the accused, are trying to find out whether the cash collected from the distillery companies are hidden in any other place,” a police officer told The Hindu on Wednesday.

In a related development, Kessireddy Rajashekar Reddy, who was Accused No. l and in judicial custody, filed an affidavit in the ACB Special Court, stating that he was in no way connected with the cash seized by the SIT in a farmhouse in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana.

He alleged that the police were projecting that the seized ₹11 crore belonged to him and were making baseless allegations. “They are trying to prevent me from getting bail,” Mr. Rajashekar Reddy alleged.
