The movement of vehicles on Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway (NH75), one of the busiest roads, was badly hit following landslips near Maranahalli in Sakleshpur on Thursday. Hundreds of passengers were stuck in the traffic through the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
According to local people, landslips occurred at multiple places between Sakaleshpur and Maranahalli on Wednesday night. The local officials stopped the movement of vehicles by placing barricades to avoid further untoward incidents.
Landslips were reported at Heggadde, Donigal, and Doddathappale near Sakaleshpur. Hundreds of vehicles, including luxury buses of KSRTC, trucks, and cars, were stuck on the highway for several hours. Passengers spent the whole night in the vehicles amidst heavy rains.
The officers of Revenue Department, police, forest, National Highways Authority of India and other agencies worked for long hours to clear the debris. Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumar, on Thursday morning, issued an order diverting the vehicles commuting on the to alternative routes. She visited visited the spot and stated that the administration had identified 12 points vulnerable to landslips on the stretch.
Meanwhile, three of the four routes between Belagavi and Goa were closed due to heavy rain on Wednesday.
