Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan was among four MPs who took oath as the Rajya Sabha members on Friday (July 25, 2025).
The other three MPs who took oath were Rajathi Salma, S.R. Sivalingam, and P. Wilson. They belong to DMK.
All the four members from Tamil Nadu, including Mr. Haasan, took the oath under the Constitution of India, in Tamil.
The 69-year-old Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), founder and actor-turned-politician talking to mediapersons outside the Parliament earlier actor said, “I am very proud and honoured.” He was elected to Rajya Sabha with the support of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu.
On June 12, six members from Tamil Nadu were elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha. The two other members were from AIADMK and are expected to take oath on Monday (July 28).
Tamil Nadu has 18 seats in the Rajya Sabha. Apart from the DMK and AIADMK, the Congress and Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) also have representation. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram and former Union Minister G.K. Vasan represent Tamil Nadu in the Upper House for their respective parties.
