1. Karnataka rains: Below normal rain in July puts Kodagu district on alert for ‘dreaded’ August

Notwithstanding the comfortable storage positions in the major reservoirs of the Cauvery basin in Karnataka, the catchment area in Kodagu district has received below normal rain in July, and has triggered an alert in the district administration. Reason? A below-normal rainfall during July tends to be followed by heavy to very heavy rains in August.

The hilly district ends up receiving 20 to 30 days of precipitation within a week, resulting in wide-spread damage to property, localized flooding and crop loss, apart from landslides. Though it is not the rule, public memory of the devastation caused in 2018, and similar trends in the following two to 3 years, has kept residents and officials on edge.

2. Bengaluru-Mangaluru national highway made safer by repair of damaged river embankment on Shiradi Ghat

The National Highways division of Karnataka Public Works Department recently completed work on the permanent restoration of Kempuhole river embankment on the Shiradi Ghat stretch of Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway 75 that was washed away at many places during rains in August 2018.

Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has spent ₹41 crore on repairing the embankment that was damaged in at least 13 locations along the 25-km ghat stretch between Maranahalli in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district and Gundya in Kadaba taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

3. 250 villages of Kanakapura taluk to get Cauvery water: Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar

Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said a plan would be formulated to supply drinking water from the river Cauvery to 250 villages in Kanakapura taluk in Bengaluru South (former Ramanagara) district of Karnataka.

“We are planning to pump Cauvery water from near Sangam to 250 villages for drinking purposes. The project to supply Cauvery water to the tanks of the taluk has already been kicked off,” he said, during a Janaspandana programme at Kanakapura on July 21.
