1. Would you eat near a waste dump? Indira Canteen customers in Bengaluru ask

Would you eat near a garbage dump? That is the question patrons of some Indira Canteens, which provide food at highly subsidised rates, are asking. Customers complain that hygiene at several Indira Canteens in Bengaluru have been compromised as garbage is being indiscriminately dumped near many of these eateries.

A reality check by The Hindu revealed that at least seven canteens — in Chalavadipalya (Chamarajpet), Tannery Road (Manishwar Nagar), Shivajinagar, S.P. Road, Austin Town, Ejipura, Palace Guttahalli, and Sampige Road, which are located in high-density and high-footfall areas — are close to garbage black spots, or, in some cases, garbage transfer stations, rendering the surroundings unhygienic. Many canteens have also been accused of poor waste management.

2. First Indian epigraphical reference to Halley’s comet found in 15th century copper plate inscription in Srisailam

The first Indian epigraphical reference to Halley’s comet has been discovered in a copper plate inscription dated 1456 CE belonging to the Vijayanagara period and preserved at the Srisailam Mallikarjunaswamy temple in Andhra Pradesh. The inscription records a grant made by the Vijayanagara ruler Mallikarjuna to a Vedic scholar on Śaka 1378, Dhātru Āshāḍha ba. 11, corresponding to Monday, June 28, 1456 CE.

Dr. K. Munirathnam Reddy, Director, Epigraphy Branch of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), who announced the discovery, told The Hindu that the inscription is written in Sanskrit, using Nagari script, and refers to the appearance of a comet and a subsequent meteor shower — events that historically coincide with the 1456 appearance of Halley’s comet.

3. Narendra Modi-led Government addressed problems facing health sector with ‘holistic’ view: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 20, 2025 lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for its “holistic” approach in addressing health issues faced by the public. He was speaking after inaugurating the Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) Bengaluru campus.

“Our leader and PM Modi had said several years ago in Gujarat that poverty’s biggest issue is illness and the cost of treatment; the administration has to provide for the treatment of illness for the poor. I can say with pride today that Modi, when he became the Prime Minister, fulfilled it by providing 60 crore poor with free treatment up to ₹5 lakh,” Mr. Shah said.
