Incessant downpour in the Malnad region threw life out of gear, triggering landslips and disrupting the movement of traffic on major roads.
The landslip in Doddathappale, near Sakleshpur, affected vehicle movement on the NH-75, connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru, on Monday night. Many vehicles were stranded between Sakleshpur and Shiradi Ghat as the road was filled with debris.
Police personnel and officials of the National Highways Authority of India cleared the debris and the traffic was restored on Tuesday morning. However, the road between Sakleshpur and Gundia, including Shiradi Ghat stretch, was vulnerable to landslips, and travellers faced difficulty crossing the stretch during the rain.
The movement of vehicles on Agumbe ghat, which connects Shivamogga with Udupi district, was disrupted after a tree fell on the first curve. Vehicles were stuck in the traffic for hours, before the road was cleared.
Similarly, the travellers on Hulikal ghat that connects Hosanagar with Udupi district had difficulty after a truck developed a glitch and stuck at a deep curve on Monday night. The movement of vehicles was restored the next morning.
A car was damaged after a tree fell on it at Kallathagiri, near Lingadahalli, in Tarikere taluk on Tuesday. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Many parts of the Malnad region received moderate to heavy rains on Tuesday. The rain gauge at Sulagodu in Hosanagara recorded 132 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour ending at 8.30 a.m. This is the highest in Shivamogga district.
In Hassan district, parts of Sakleshpur taluk recorded heavy rains. Hanbal hobli received 77.9 mm of rainfall and Hettur hobli recorded 88.6 mm. Chikkamagaluru district received an average of 27.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 14.7 mm. Sringeri taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 74.3 mm.
The inflow into reservoirs has been on the rise following heavy rains in the Malnad region. The water level in Linganmakki reservoir in Sagar taluk increased by over three feet within 24 hours, and the live capacity increased by almost 4 tmcft.
The water level in the reservoir stood at 1769.7 ft. at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. It was 1,766.4 on Monday. The live capacity as of Tuesday stood at 39.15 tmcft. (25.82%), against the previous day 35.01 TMC.
The full reservoir level is 1,819 ft., and the total live capacity of the reservoir is 151.64 tmcft. As of Tuesday morning, the inflow was 50,576 cusecs.
