A strong pitch to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Gandikota has been placed before Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu by Andhra Pradeh Twenty Point Programme Implementation Committee Chairperson Lanka Dinakar. The proposal came after a comprehensive review meeting held on Tuesday (July 28, 2025) at the Adventure Sports Academy in Gandikota, aiming to transform the historic site into a global tourism destination.
Mr. Dinakar, in an interaction with The Hindu on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), emphasised that Gandikota, often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of India,” deserves international recognition for its natural beauty and rich heritage. He submitted detailed recommendations for developing a full-fledged tourism circuit, utilising ₹88 crore sanctioned under the Special Assistance for Capital Infrastructure (SASCI) scheme and seeking additional funds from central, state, CSR, and private sources.
The report pointed out that while Gandikota currently draws 20,000 visitors monthly, primarily on weekends, it has the potential to attract over one lakh tourists per month. However, existing infrastructure is inadequate and unhygienic. Mr. Dinakar called for a comprehensive master plan instead of piecemeal efforts, to avoid mismatched and obsolete infrastructure.
Key recommendations include restoring the historic Sri Ranganatha and Madhavaraya temples with Archaeological Department approval, launching ropeways and boating for adventure tourism, creating food courts and night-stay facilities, promoting homestays, and improving road connectivity. The proposal also highlights the need for enhanced security, sanitation, and cultural infrastructure like amphitheaters and museums, apart from displaying Pemmasani and other dynasties history.
Of the 1,100 acres handed over to the A.P. Tourism Development Corporation, 50 acres are earmarked for star hotels. Mr. Dinakar urged swift inter-departmental coordination and direction from the Chief Minister to implement the vision.
