Elderly man succumbs to injuries weeks after alleged assault in Kozhikode

An 85-year-old man, who sustained severe head injuries after allegedly being assaulted with a helmet by a 26-year-old, died at Kozhikode Cooperative Hospital on Saturday night (July 19). The deceased has been identified as Devadasan, a resident of Eranhipalam.

According to Nadakkavu police, the incident occurred near Eranhipalam on June 26 following a roadside altercation. Devadasan, who lost consciousness after the alleged assault, had been under intensive medical care for over three weeks before succumbing to his injuries.

The police said the accused, identified as T.V. Ajay, was arrested shortly after the incident and remanded in judicial custody. He was initially booked under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 118(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Following Devadasan’s death, Ajay will now face charges under Section 103 of the BNS (punishment for murder). The police will also submit a fresh report in court seeking the cancellation of his bail.

“The elderly man was reportedly attacked after he questioned Ajay’s rash driving,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. “We also recovered CCTV footage of the assault, which was crucial in identifying and arresting the accused.” The officer added that the accused, who worked for a private travel company, claimed he reacted violently after Devadasan allegedly used abusive language.
