Contempt notices to Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary over financial assistance to urban poor

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration T.K. Sreedevi in a contempt of court case relating to extending financial assistance to the urban poor.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara directed the two officials to file their responses and adjourned the hearing to July 29. Earlier, G. Srinivas of Narayanapet district filed a writ petition seeking a direction to the State government to provide financial assistance to poor families in urban areas as was being done in the case of rural areas and villages.

The petitioner’s counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar contended that while the government was extending financial assistance of ₹12,000 a year to farmers in villages, no such benefit was reaching the poor persons in urban areas. The HC then passed an order to the government to consider the representation of the petitioner and take a call. The petitioner filed the contempt of court case stating that even after a lapse of five months of submitting memorandum to the government, the top officials did not act upon it.
