Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has favoured creation of a new power distribution company as part of reforms.
In addition to the northern and southern power distribution companies, the new Discom would exclusively deal with free power to the farm sector, free power up to 200 units to eligible households, free power to farmers and other schemes being implemented in the interests of the common people. The new Discom would cover the entire State as a single unit, he said directing the officials concerned to work out modalities in this direction.
The Chief Minister wanted an overhaul, cleansing of the Energy department for ensuring its effective functioning and directed the department to usher in reforms in this direction. Reforms in the sector were envisaged to improve the performance of the power utilities and enhance their ranking at the national level.
“Reforms are mandatory to strengthen the financial situation of the distribution companies,” he said. Even as they embark upon restructuring of the Discoms, the officials should simultaneously focus on lessening the loan burden on them. A comprehensive action plan should be prepared in this direction to restructure the loans as the power distribution firms faced severe financial crisis because of the loans which entailed interest of more than 10%.
The Chief Minister instructed the officials to see that solar power consumption was promoted in Government schools, colleges and offices across the State. Steps should be initiated to set up solar power plants in government offices. The district collectors should be entrusted with the responsibility of identifying suitable buildings to set up solar plants in their respective districts, he said directing the officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan in this direction on a war footing.
