BBMP’s canine monitoring centre to come up in Yelahanka

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is setting up a dog monitoring centre in northern Bengaluru’s Yelahanka to observe dogs that are involved in repeated dog bite cases.

A senior BBMP officer explained that the centre will function like a community canal, where a behaviourist will be deployed. Dogs displaying unprovoked aggression will be brought in and monitored for a few days.

“The behaviourist will train the dog before releasing it back to the same location,” he said, adding that each BBMP zone will maintain records of dogs involved in repeated biting incidents.

33 dogs detained

Chandraiah T., joint director of Animal Husbandry at BBMP, said they have captured a total of 33 dogs from the area where an elderly citizen was mauled to death in the early hours of Tuesday. He said that they will monitor the dogs for the next ten days to determine whether any are infected with rabies.

“Usually, a rabid dog will die within ten days. So these dogs will be observed at a lab during this period for any behavioural changes requiring attention,” Mr. Chandraiah told The Hindu. “Once the monitoring ends, we will release the dogs back to the same location as per the guidelines,” he added.

According to him, BBMP will revaccinate all the dogs before their release. If no signs of rabies are detected, they will assess for any aggressive behaviour and train such dogs before releasing them.

A senior BBMP official said they would examine the possible cause of the attack, including whether starvation was a factor.

A BBMP official noted that Kempegowda Nagar falls under the Vidyaranyapura ward, which has approximately 943 dogs. He claimed that this particular area has a higher dog population, and all of them have been vaccinated.

However, appearing before the Lokayukta following a summons, Dr. Siddappaji, the health officer for BBMP’s Yelahanka zone, informed the ombudsman that they attend to about 15–20 dog bite cases every month from Byatarayanapura ward, located near the scene of the recent attack.

Lokayukta summons BBMP officials

Lokayukta Justice B.S. Patil reprimanded BBMP officials for failing to implement previous directives issued after an elderly woman was mauled to death by dogs in Jalahalli, north Bengaluru, in August 2024.

“Identify the dogs involved in this incident, treat them, and place them in observation homes,” the Lokayukta instructed BBMP officials. He directed BBMP to prepare and submit a detailed report.

Meanwhile, Vamsi Krishna, Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, has been tasked with visiting the Kodigehalli site and submitting an investigation report within four days.
