Alert sounded as water level in Godavari rises at Polavaram


Officials sounded an alert in the flood-prone villages in Eluru district as water level in Godavari River started rising due to heavy rains in the catchment areas.

Flood level in Godavari at the Polavaram project was 36 feet by Friday evening and the water continued to rise. The discharge was about 6 lakh cusecs, officials of the Central Water Commission (CWC) said.

Revenue, Police, Irrigation, Medical and Health, Tribal Welfare, APSRTC, Rural Water Supply (RWS), Fisheries, AP Transco and other departments officials were asked to be on alert. Due to heavy rainfall in the upstream areas at Peruru, Dummugudem and Eturunagaram villages water level is rising in the Godavari. Villagers staying on the riverbed habitations were asked to shift to safer places, officers on flood duty in Eluru district said.

District Collector K. Vetriselvi has directed the officials to provide power supply, safe drinking water and vegetables in Dacharam Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) Colony. She instructed the officers to start cooking in the R&R Colony for the persons who were being shifted to the relief camp in Dacharam village. Essential material such as milk, biscuits, medicines and drinking water are being stocked in the relief camps. Rice, dal, potatoes and other material would be distributed to the flood victims, said a Tribal Welfare department officer.

Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore has said that patrolling has been intensified along the river bund to prevent villagers entering into the Godavari. “Locals are requested not to venture into the river for fishing. Villagers should not cross the overflowing streams and rivulets,” the SP said.

Police pickets will be arranged in villages. Besides, the Eluru Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force teams have been kept on alert in the wake of floods and heavy rains, Mr. Pratap Shiva Kishore said.
