50-year-old remanded in alleged rape case in Kasaragod

A 50-year-old CPI(M) branch secretary was remanded in judicial custody after being arrested in a case of alleged repeated sexual assault of his sister-in-law, a 58-year-old woman. The alleged assaults reportedly took place in 2022 within the Ambalathara police station limits.

According to the police, the accused raped the woman twice after she moved to a house near her sister’s residence following her husband’s death. Though initially hesitant to come forward with a complaint, fearing social stigma, the survivor filed a complaint after the accused allegedly harassed her again, besides threatening her.

Based on her statement, the Ambalathara police registered a case under Section 376(N) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused was arrested a few days ago and produced in court, which remanded him.

The accused was the Pullur-Periya branch secretary of the CPI(M).

Meanwhile, the party leadership said that the accused had been removed from all party positions.
