Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh on Wednesday (July 30) said that 94 biotechnology incubators have been established across the country under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) via the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council.
Of this, three biotech incubators are functional in Andhra Pradesh.
The Minister was responding to questions raised by MPs Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu in Lok Sabha.
The three biotech incubators are located at MedTech Zone (Visakhapatnam); Yashoda Cancer Research Park (Visakhapatnam); and Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (Tirupati).
A total of ₹16.23 crore has been sanctioned for these three centres—₹4.95 crore for Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone, ₹7 crore for Yashoda Cancer Research Park and ₹4.28 crore for Sri Padmavati Women’s University.
From 2012 to 2025, the Government of India sanctioned a total of ₹489.42 crore for the establishment, development and operation of biotech incubators nationwide. Mr. Singh also mentioned that the government aims to establish 10 to 15 new biotech incubators every year, allocating ₹20 crore to ₹30 crore annually toward this goal.
These incubators have significantly contributed to innovation and entrepreneurship in the biotech sector. Over 2,500 startups have benefitted, and more than 800 products have reached the market.
Employment was generated for over 10,500 individuals, and over 1,300 intellectual property rights were registered. Over 5,000 training programmes have been conducted, benefitting around 2.5 lakh people, he said.
Mr. Singh also emphasised the substantial progress achieved in health and agri-biotech sectors. He noted that the performance of these incubators is regularly reviewed by expert committees, educational institutions and industry representatives through site inspections and review meetings.
